UChicago Alum named CEO of AS Roma
Now, we don’t know where your European football allegiances lie, but we thought this was pretty neat: Italo Zanzi, former UChicago soccer player and AB ‘96, was recently named the CEO of AS Roma, an Italian professional football club. Zanzi was formerly Deputy General Secretary of CONCACAF. He is also not hard on the eyes, and apparently once judged Miss Universe? We do not, however, have knowledge of whether or not he ever participated in a more important contest, Mr. University.

Midnight Soccer-Playing ‘neath the Stars
A UChicago tradition that is venerated above all others because it confers upon each and everyone of you the duty to crush and obliterate the dreams of your rival house. Oh but it’s all fun and games and played in good spirit. It usually starts up around 10-30pm and goes on until 11-30 so Midnight is a little bit of a misnomer. Still, night after night, Midway Plaisance is the scene for some grand battles.

More questions. More answers.

Books: There isn’t a die hard list of must-read books to get before coming here. You’ll also read ALL THE TIME when you start classes in the Fall, and approaching your coursework with a fresh perspective is a good thing. But but buthere are some summer suggestions:

Devil In The White City, Erik Larson — all the murder, magic and intrigue surrounding the 1893 World’s Fair, and a pretty awesome history of Hyde Park and the area we live in, this book has it all. It was also written by a college parent.

An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of NationsAdam Smith — you’ll definitely be reading this before you graduate.

Proof, David Auburn — UChicago alumnus David Auburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, set in Hyde Park, is about the daughter of a math professor. Both University Theater and Court Theatre will be putting on productions of Proof during the 2012-2013 season.

Uniforms: Several days ago, we answered a question about whether the Admissions Office would beat the College Programming Office in a soccer match. (The answer: of course). Our UChicago Admissions soccer team uniforms would be maroon with Phoenixy flames, and we would have these tied to our backs like capes. Here is a picture that Grace drew. Like?

Maroons embark on Italy tour

The University of Chicago women’s soccer team will spend 10 days in Italy as part of its preparation for the upcoming 2011 campaign. Head Coach Amy Reifert’s team will play three exhibition matches and participate in daily training sessions while visiting Rome, Florence, Milan, and Capri, among other areas.
