UChicago College Admissions
Great questions! Especially #2.
Interdisciplinary options: These are fields of study that you cannot major in but you can still pursue. Creative Writing is offered as a minor. It is interdisciplinary in the sense that it intersects with Cinema and Media Studies, Theater and Performance Studies and even the Sciences (think screenplays, plays, sci-fi etc.). Another option includes majoring in English with a special focus on Creative Writing (for example: a creative B.A.). One of us tumblr-ers is actually writing a creative B.A. and we can vouch, the department is top notch.
Hi: OHAI.
Where fun comes to die: As with many silly UChicago slogans, this one originated on a t-shirt sold as a fundraiser by Tufts House. We’re told that they have the most fun of anyone (like taking the whole house out to dinner on the funds they raise from selling the shirt). To be fair, we’re not really the kind of place where people come to have John Belushi/Animal House style fun in the streets on a Tuesday night. Although that kind of fun has its place, it’s not our everyday style, but it would be hard to argue that fun doesn’t happen here— with the world’s largest Scavenger Hunt, a Zombie Readiness task force, 350+ other clubs and organizations, awesome house culture, and the city of Chicago at the ready, there is certainly a lot of fun to be had. As is the UChicago tradition in most things social and intellectual, we’d say that a more accurate descriptor is that we’re where fun comes to have its mind blown.
Dance:  Firstly, wow, congratulations on being a fantastic dancer! (We can barely walk 10 feet without falling down here at the UChicago admissions tumblr, so dance skills of any kind are more than we could ever muster!) Secondly, you could take a look at the University Ballet of Chicago. They do two performances a year; a lot of their dancers have done ballet all their lives and might have been in a situation similar to yours. UBallet usually brings in teachers from different dance schools around Chicago for free classes. If you can’t get enough through UBallet, we’d encourage you to consider enrolling in one of the nearby dance schools for additional classes. While we do not have any formal partnerships with either of the programs you mentioned outside of UBallet, it is very possible that you could enroll and balance a class or two there with your studies here if it is a strong priority for you.
